Teens and depression: What parents can do to help
Depression is more than feeling sad or blue. Depression in teens can cause a change in thinking, aches or pains, anxiety and sadness. It can also make your teen think about
death or suicide, and cause them to stop talking to friends and family.
Depression takes many forms and doesn’t just go away when a person wants to feel better. In teens, depression can begin at age 15, and some forms can even run in the
family.
Because suicide is the leading cause of death among young adults in the United States, it is important that teens get the help they need at the first signs of depression. If you think your teenager is depressed, call his or her doctor right away. You should also follow these steps to help lower the stress your teen feels:
- Focus on and reward good behavior rather than punishing bad behavior.
- Accept the fact that your teen will make mistakes and not always do exactly as you say.
- Listen to any worries your teen may have and help him or her feel better by talking about the problem.
If your doctor finds that your teen is depressed, he or she will develop a personal treatment plan. This may include therapy, medication, or a combination of the two.
